Sorsen is State Voice of Democracy Finalist for VFW Speech Contest-Places 9th!

Andrew Sorsen, a Seward High Senior, was selected the District VFW “Voice of Democracy” VFW Speech contest winner and the District 12 representative to the state VFW “Voice of Democracy” speech contest. The taped presentation was judged on the state level and he was recognized and honored at the recent VFW meeting, held Saturday, January 30,2009 at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Grand Island. He was accompanied to the event by his mother and representatives from his sponsoring post, the Seward VFW Post 4755 and Seward VFW Auxiliary. Local VFW Chairman is Dan Kovar and Andrew’s speech coach is Clark Kolterman, from Seward High School.
Andrew’s speech placed 9th in the state level competition and he was presented with a check for $150. He was also honored on the local, district and regional levels with medals, trophies and cash awards. Andrew is the son of Steve and Joni Sorsen of Seward. He plans to attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
There were 34 students from Seward High that competed in the VFW speech contest on the local level. Michelle Ness, Stephanie Rippstein and Sorsen were selected to represent the VFW Post 4755 at the District Contest. Local judges were Jill Johnson, Dr. Jerry Pfabe and Dr. Larry Grothaus, all of Seward. Sorsen placed first at the VFW District level and Ness placed third in the contest. They were recognized by the VFW District at their recent meeting in Seward.
