Seward High Participates in Milford High School Speech Tourney
SHS Senior Matt Johnson Wins Informative Speech Competition for Seward

Seward High participated in the last regular speech meet of the season at Milford High School on Saturday, February 20, 2010. Nine students from Seward High received medals at the competition and Seward placed third overall. Lincoln Southwest High School won the tournament. Senior Matt Johnson won the Informative Speech Contest with his speech on Coffee. Stephanie Rippstein placed third in the Informative category with her speech featuring “The Phantom of the Opera.” Andrew Sorsen placed third in the Extemporaneous finals with the question of “US and China as trade partners.”
Sarah Garbers placed third in Entertaining with her speech on “Being an Asian Sensation!” Michelle Ness won the fourth place medal in Entertaining Speaking on the topic of “Spiders.” Dayna Svoboda placed second in Serious Prose with “My Mother’s Touch” by Lauren Deyou. The Seward High Drama Team Oral Interp of Drama’s presentation of “The Complete History of America Abridged” with Bobi Albrecht, Ariana Miller, Carson Shepherd and Sarah Garbers placed fourth in their final round. The Duet “The Boy Book” featured Dayana Svoboda and Jillian Kongsjord and placed fourth in the finals competition. All of the finalist won Superior ratings. Jaclyn Pennington was recognized as the outstanding novice in Persuasive Speaking with a medal.
Other SHS students that participated in the tournament included Andrew Sorsen-Persuasion-Superior, Stephanie Rippstein-Persuasion-Superior, Stephanine Rippstein and Daniel Pfeiffer-Duet-Superior, Daniel Pfeiffer-Humorous Prose-Superior, Michelle Ness, Dayna Svoboda, Daniel Pfeiffer, Carl Heinicke and Jillian Kongsjord-OID Drama Team-Superior, Bobi Albrecht and Jessica Kadavy-Duet-Excellent, Alyssa Sleight-Persuasive-Excellent and Informative-Superior, Jillian Kongsjord-Humorous Prose-Superior, Robby Kirkland-Humorous Prose-Superior, Katie Thrailkill-Poetry-Superior and Persuasive-Superior, Carl Heinicke-Extemp-Superior, Zach Bruick-Extemp-Superior, Blake Vajgrt-Extemp-Superior, Jaclyn Pennington-Persuasive-Superior and Informative-Superior, Ariana Miller-Poetry-Superior, Katie Beckler-Serious Prose Lit-Superior, Lea Kayton-Informative-Superior and Persuasive-Superior.
Their coach is Clark Kolterman. The team travels to York for the Central Conference Speech Tournament on Monday, Feb. 22 and to the NSAA District Speech Contest in Schuyler on Feb. 27th to vie for the opportunity to attend the State Speech Contest in Kearney on March 18th.
