by Craig Williams

June 01, 2009

Recent Seward High graduate, John Wiemer of Seward was honored on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at noon at the Seward Rotary Club meeting.  He was presented the “Tanderup” award by the Seward Rotary Club.  It is  presented to a local, individual in the greater Seward area that over came a difficult personal situation and achieved success in spite of the situation.  It is given in honor of the late Wayne Tanderup, a longtime member of the Seward Rotary that was very successful in his business career, was a loving husband and a proud father, even though he had been a victim of polio at an early age.  John is the son of Verle and Jeanne Wiemer of Seward.

John was involved in a fall during his freshman year in high school and suffered severe head, vision and brain damage.  Working in therapy in Lincoln and Seward, John regained all of his physical abilities and eventfully was selected to be the valedictorian at his recent Seward High School Commencement ceremony.  He participated in golf, cross country and basketball, is a leader in the local Key Club, FBLA and his church youth group.  He was a member of the SHS choir, in the musical and National Honor Society and named a Youth Rotarian of the Month.  He plans to attend Doane College at Crete and major in Math and be involved in their golf team.

Presenting the traveling trophy to John was Seward Rotarian Erich Helge, the son in law of the late Wayne Tanderup.  Others that have received the award include Tait Rief, Ducer Smith, Brian Pike, Matt Brandel and John Wiemer.
