May 11, 2009
Seward High Juniors, Stephanie Rippstein and Andrew Sorsen were selected to represent Seward High in the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Student Writing Achievement Awards competition. Each junior is asked to submit“Best Work” writing and is also asked to respond to one of two possible witting prompts.
Each student’s work is submitted to Dr. Robert Brooke, NCTE State Coordinator for Nebraska’s Student Writing Achievement Awards. He, along with members of the Nebraska Writing Project, evaluate the Nebraska entries and select the top five awardees for 2009-2010 for NCTE from Nebraska.
The students will be notified if their works are selected for the award. Last year states submitted 1, 789 entries nationally and 564 of the students were honored by NCTE. The local program is also endorsed by the Nebraska English Language Arts Council (NELAC) and they host the Honors Day program at the state capitol in Lincoln each May.
The students were assisted by SHS English Teachers Dory von Kampen and Clark Kolterman.
